Did you know hot weather plays a big role in how often you need to change your air filter? During the hot summer months, air conditioners are working overtime to keep us cool. When your air conditioning system is working harder the air filter collects dust at a faster rate and thus affects how often it needs to be replaced. Replacing air filters is important; we’ll help you learn all about air filters and when to replace them in the summer!
USING YOUR AIR CONDITIONER
To keep your home comfortable during the summer, chances are you have been using your air conditioner regularly. When your air conditioning system is running more often it is blowing more air through the air filter. When more air is moving through the filter, more dirt and other pollutants such as dust, mites, pollen, and mold get drawn inside. Pollutants can impede the performance and efficiency of your air conditioner or be recirculated into your air supply – yuck!
DIRT AND YOUR AIR FILTER
When the air filter is dirty, it is not as effective at keeping air particles out. This can lead to many problems such as:
- reduced indoor air quality
- reduced air flow and efficiency
- warm and cold spots due to reduced airflow
- dirty coils and fans which can lead to a breakdown
In order to avoid running into these problems, check the air filter for dirt and grime, and replacing air filters as necessary.
WHEN TO REPLACE AIR FILTERS
According to the Department of Energy, replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%. Replace your air filters every 3 months. During the cooling season, air filters need more frequent attention. Constant AC use may lead to replacing air filters every month or two. It is smart to check your air filter often during summer especially if you have pets or if the air conditioner is subject to dusty conditions.
