Water Heater Safety & What You Need to Know to Keep Your Family Safe

Water-Heater-Safety

Water heaters are a major household convenience that many people rely on every single day. Although water heaters remain unseen most of the time, it is important to keep in mind that they need regular maintenance for optimal efficiency and safety reasons. Check out our blog for water heater safety tips that you can use to keep your water heater running smoothly and your family and home safe.

SIZE YOUR WATER HEATER PROPERLY

Water heaters should be properly sized for your home, in order to meet your household’s hot water needs and to operate more efficiently. If you have not considered what type of water heater might be best for your home, learn about all the different water heaters that Bob’s Heating has to offer. You can go to energy.gov to figure out how to size each type of water heater. In order to get the most accurate results for your home, it is always best to consult a qualified contractor.

SET WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE AT 120° F

According to energy.gov, water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy consumed in your home. It is recommended to turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (up to 120°F) to not only save energy but to avoid scalding. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) pins the ideal balance between safety and comfort at a setting of 120 °F as well. Children and the elderly are most susceptible to scalding injuries. Make sure your water heater is at a safe temperature to prevent burns.

KEEP SURROUNDING AREA CLEAR

It is important to keep the area around your water heater clean and free of combustible and flammable material. Flammable and combustible products are used for a wide variety of purposes and are commonly found in the home. Some of these items include gasoline, paint solvents, lighter fluid, dry cleaning agents, oil, spray paint, propane, alcohol, and nail polish. Storing flammable substances in the vicinity of a water heater can trigger a fire.

KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF A WATER HEATER

In case of a water heater dilemma, it is a good idea to know how to shut off the water and the fuel or power supply to the water heater. This is especially important in the event of an emergency or if your water heater is leaking. There should be a gas valve or a disconnect switch within a few feet of the water heater.  As for the water shut-off, most shut-off valves are located above the water heater on the cold side piping. Furthermore, knowing how to shut the water off can make all the difference when you have water leaking or if you smell gas and have to act fast.
