Energy Saving Tips

Whether you rent or buy, your energy bill can be hard to control. If you own your home, you can help to reduce energy costs by installing new appliances or making certain home improvement changes. But if you are renting your home, making these changes can be a little bit tougher since you need the help of your landlord. You might wonder how you can better manage your energy bill without radical home improvements. We have a few solutions that are easy to implement and cost-effective.

UPDATE LIGHTING

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to save on electricity! Energy Star recommends replacing your five most frequently used lighting fixtures with energy efficient bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, also known as CFLs or LEDs use about 75% less energy than a standard light bulb.

USE A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT

A programmable thermostat allows you to program your home’s temperature settings for all hours of the day. This will allow for you to schedule specific times when your thermostat is on or off, rather than manually turning it up and down all day. This will ensure that electricity is only being used during peak hours of the day.

UNPLUG SMALL ELECTRONICS

Did you know that even when not in use, small consumer electronics can use energy even when switched off according to Energy Star? When not using the equipment, remembering to unplug these devices can help cut costs on your energy bill. If unplugging everything after you use seems a little tedious, try using a power strip. This way you can turn everything off at once rather than individually.

KEEP VENTILATION REGISTERS CLEAR

Keeping registers clear can help to circulate air better as well as reduce energy costs. If registers are blocked and the heat is on, your system is trying harder to force the air out. If these are free and clear, the air can flow freely.

LAUNDRY

Washing laundry with cold water can cut back tremendously on the amount of energy you use. According to Energy Star, “Hot water heating accounts for about 90% of the energy your machine uses to wash clothes.” Washing partial loads of laundry can also be adding more money to your bill. Washing full loads of laundry can save a few thousand gallons of water each year.
