Carbon Monoxide Detectors – REQUIRED in Washington State After January 1st, 2013

As of January 1, 2013, Washington State has introduced a new carbon monoxide detector code. The code now requires that carbon monoxide alarms be installed on each floor of a home and outside every bedroom.

This code is expected to take effect with any new construction. If your home does not currently have carbon monoxide detectors, you will be required to install detectors when any major alteration, repair or addition occurs. This includes HVAC and plumbing work, so be sure to let us know if you need a carbon monoxide alarm when we schedule your next appointment for repair or installation. We will make sure to get one or many installed for you!

If you are in the process of buying or selling a home, this is something to consider in the appraisal process. Make sure your home or the home you are inquiring about is up to code so that a second costly appraisal can be avoided.

Even if you do not have upcoming repairs, it is still a good idea to consider installing detectors to ensure the safety of your loved ones. Carbon monoxide poisoning has been known as the “silent killer” because there is no sent and it cannot be seen. A person can be poisoned in mere minutes without proper detection. Carbon Monoxide detectors are a minimal expense for the safety they ensure.

Give us a call if you have questions about the code or to have a Carbon Monoxide detector installed in your home. For more information you can also go to the Washington State Department of Health website for details on Carbon Monoxide detection, prevention, and code.
